This past week I visited Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, TN to experience their Country Christmas!  With Nashville only 2.5 hours away from Louisville, this is one of the top rated places to go for a fun weekend or holiday trip.  You couldn’t ask for a more spectacular place to experience so many things!  Whether going as a family to focus on all of the kid-friendly events or just wanting to enjoy a romantic weekend with your significant other, there is something for everyone.  A Country Christmas has been hailed as one of the “Ten Great Places to Catch up with Santa” by USA Today; “The Most Christmassy Hotel in the b2ap3_thumbnail_lobby.jpgNation” by the Travel Channel’s Extreme Christmas; one of the top 10 places to spend Christmas in the world by Travel + Leisure; and a “Nashville treasure” by Southern Living.

There is a huge parking lot for self-parking right outside the Cascades lobby and it is easy to hop out and get a bellman to help unload your items.  Upon entering the Cascades section of this vast property I was just in awe.  From the gorgeous blown glass floral arrangements to the dancing water fountains, we knew we were in for a treat.

b2ap3_thumbnail_1_20151204-180836_1.jpgWe got there early and while we waited for our room to be ready we went to the Nutcracker Character Breakfast in the Delta Water’s Edge Section.  The scenery is made to look like scenes from the Nutcracker ballet and everything fit perfectly with the new theme of the hotel this year!  We dined at their buffet on everything from waffles and omlettes from the specialty stations, to pastries, eggs, bacon, and more.  There was even a chocolate fondue fountain!  Kids get to meet the Nutcracker prince and Sugar Plum Fairy with tableside hugs and photos.

We spent a little time after we ate looking in some of the wonderful little shops and then took a boat ride through the entire Delta Atrium, inside!  The kids loved looking at all of the Christmas lights and I loved hearing all about the history of the hotel!

After checking into our spacious room with 2 queen beds, we checked out the view from the balcony, into the Atrium.  The views in any section of the resort are spectacular, but in the Gardens section, your room’s balcony overlooks the inside gardens, beautiful hanging twinkling lights, and awesome Christmas music themed décor hung in every corner!

After unpacking we caught the shuttle and took a quick trip over to Grand Ole Opry House where the all new Grinch the Musical is playing this year.   My 4 and 9 year old watched every minute of the show in amazement and loved the fact that they could take refreshments into the theater.  This is a Broadway style production, with extremely talented actors playing all of the roles you are familiar with from the classic story of the Grinch.  The costumes and scenery are colorful and fun and the music made you want to sing along.  This is a MUST SEE show for the entire family! It was for sure our favorite part of all the new offerings at Opryland this year!

We took the shuttle bus back over to the Delta Atrium and went upstairs to a cozy little pizza place for dinner.  We were served quickly and we were able to sit and watch the fountain show where the water and lights are all themed to Christmasb2ap3_thumbnail_8_20151204-180916_1.jpg music.  On our way back to our room, we took time to view the Parade of Trees.  This is a self-guided tour of stunningly decorated Christmas trees throughout the resort. Numerous country artists and other celebrities will have specially decorated trees featured. Each tree’s decorations and prizes are available to the highest online bidder as a way to benefit favorite charities.  As we got back to the room that night and got the boys into their Christmas pjs, everyone was truly in the holiday spirit.

The next morning we got up and grabbed pastries from a nice little shop downstairs.  Then we let the kids take some time going on the Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt throughout the hotel.  We also did some shopping at the Treasures for the Holiday gift and vendor show.

After we checked out we got in the car and drove across the street to experience ICE!™ which also has a Nutcracker theme this year.  It is a quick and easy walk, but there is also a shuttle if you would rather wait and ride. Artisans from Harbin, China arrived months ago and transformed two million pounds of ice into larger than life colorful sculptures and incredible 20 ft. tall slides.  ICE!™! takes place in the 40,000 sq. ft. events center.  The event, which takes place inside, portrays the lovable characters and storyline from the story we all know so well.  They do provide you with huge warm parkas to wear inside (although you should still bring your own coat to wear underneath, a hat and gloves as it is only 9 degrees inside).  My kids especially love the ice slide!  You can go down as many times as you want!  I loved seeing the life-size nutcrackers, ballerinas, and Nutcracker scenes all carved out of ice!

They have hot chocolate stations when you come out where you can purchase a steaming hot mug with marshmallows!  You can also visit the Peeps Gingerbread making station.  The children were thrilled to decorate their own gingerbread house!  b2ap3_thumbnail_23.jpgWe looked around in the gift shop and let the kids ride the train which has it's own little area in the same building as ICE!. The train ride costs about $3 per child per ride, but it went for awhile and they were both excited to be riding!

Opryland has so much more to offer visitors such as: Photos with Santa, Arctic Plunge Snow Tubing & Glacier Glide Ice Skating, Christmas Lights, Outdoor Nativity Display, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Carriage Rides, and so much more!
