Review

Derby Dinner Playhouse kicked off their 2016-2017 season last week with the opening of the popular comedy ARSENIC & OLD LACE.  I was really looking forward to having a fun night out with lots of laughs, and this show did not disappoint!

ARSENIC & OLD LACE  is a riotous tale of two charming old ladies, played by Janet Essenpreis (Martha) and Debbie King-b2ap3_thumbnail_Arsenic--Old-Lace-Photo-2016.jpgRaque (Abby), who dispense cheer to all, along with elderberry wine spiked with arsenic!  They play their roles beautifully, making you believe that they are super sweet ladies who simply think they are helping the greater good!

The ladies are not the only murderous members of the Brewster clan.  We meet nephew Jonathan, played by David Myers, who has his face altered to hide from the authorities.  He is mysteriously evil and brings his assistant “Dr. Einstein” to the ladies home to try to even the score between how many men he has killed as opposed to how many his aunts have killed.

One of the liveliest characters in this show is Teddy, played by none other than the J.R. Stuart!  Teddy believes he is actually Teddy Roosevelt and has you in stitches from laughing so hard!

Tina Jo Wallace and Brian Bowman play characters who add a love story twist into the show.  Brian’s character Mortimer is horrified to find out what his aunts have been doing but ends up receiving wonderful news by the end of the show that eases his fears.

Add in several dead bodies and some very confused cops and you are sure to enjoy this zany comedy!

ARSENIC & OLD LACE originally opened on Broadway in 1941 with Boris Karloff starring in the role of Jonathan Brewster and Frank Capra directed the film version in 1944 starring Cary Grant.  This play was written by Joseph Kesselring and Derby Dinner’s production is under the direction of and produced by Bekki Jo Schneider.

The show runs through June 26, 2016.  For ticket information please call 812-288-8281 or visit www.derbydinner.com
