My family was recently invited to enjoy a mini vacation staying at the Galt House hotel!  We got a sneak peek into all of the wonderful holiday activities they have to offer.  Whether a family is looking for a staycation hotel overnight package, or to come down to enjoy some of the specialty events, there is truly something for everyone!  The Galt House is so easy to get to, as it is right off 4th street and they have two very easy to use parking garages that are affordable!

Our weekend included several meals at RIVUE Restaurant & Lounge.  This location offers a breath-taking view of the city and at Christmas time seems even more special.  The kids love how the floor moves and you get a great view of the city as the restaurant slowly turns.  RIVUE Restaurant and Lounge is locally owned and offers a fresh perspective on the city and river from 25 stories up along with a fresh take on dinner and drinks.  RIVUE ranks in the Top 5 Revolving Restaurants in the U.S.  We had their tasty Thanksgiving Dinner and highly recommend making reservations if you are still looking for something to do this week!  RIVUE is Hosting Thanksgiving Dinner this holiday season. It’s a great way to share a delicious meal with your family without all the hassle of cooking and cleaning! Reservations can be made by calling 502-568-4239.

The highlight of our weekend of course was a tour of The Galt House’s KaLightoscope Christmas attraction!  This is a unique and unrivaled annual favorite. It’s so spectacular, you’ll feel like a child when you wander through the landscape of massive lighted holiday displays. Enjoy interactive and magical luminaries handcrafted by Chinese artisans from Zigong, China. KaLightoscope is also home to Santa’s “Naughty or Nice” List, where you can decide where your own name belong.

My children loved the giant Santa on his surfboard and the reindeer flying high above.

You could literally find yourself staying in here for hours just taking in all of the colors and the magnificent handiwork! For KaLightoscope, you get a free child's ticket (for kids 12 and under) with the purchase of an adult ticket all season long!

Upon exiting from the Candy Cane tunnel of KaLightoscope, you enter the Christmas Village.  There is a day’s worth of activities to explore with your family here so be sure to allow time for it all!  Start off by looking at all of the cute gingerbread houses that were submitted for their annual contest, and let your kids get their photo in front of the life size Gingerbread house the Galt House created!

Next you can all have a seat to Make a Flake!  You will learn how to cut out beautiful snowflake shapes from paper and even how to turn them into works of art.  Round the corner to find a Letter writing to Santa station!  Have the kids put down their wishes on the stationary provided and then drop them into Santa’s over-sized bag!  Then be sure to get your video taken on the new Santa’s Sleigh Green Screen Experience!  The kids can get into Santa’s sleigh and have a blast pretending to ride atop the Louisville city scene.  The Galt House will email you a link to your video which you can then share!  Here is ours:

You can clearly tell that my 2 year old just wasn’t quite sure what to think!  Lol

Next up is the Snow Fairy Castle!  The Snow Fairy Princess welcomes little ones to her magical castle and poses for photos.  She makes a special wish with them and answers questions!  My little boys commented on how pretty she was!  We will have a review specific to the Tea with the Snow Fairy Princess Special event coming soon as well!  Then they got back into their “boyish” spirit by drawing on the wall!  Yep, I said that right!  There is an entire wall with Dry Erase markers where kids can draw Christmas pictures and be creative!   I loved walking around and looking at the restored holiday characters that are on display!  There are more than 3 dozen old Stewart’s Department Store animated figures set up in cute little scenes and holiday window displays.  The kids can also play the Find Santa’s Key Game by using their game piece to find clues to small doors that open up throughout the village!  We also stopped to pose for a picture with the WDRB Snow Fox!

All of this and then we still had more to explore as we entered the Candy Cane Forest.  This room features the Peppermint Express and has over 100 forest animals and elves working hard to prepare for Christmas!  The Kiddie Train ride is hugely popular and because it wasn’t crowded while we were there, my children rode it several times.  Ernie the Engineer is the newest member of the forest this year and the kids got to meet him.  We are returning next weekend for Ernie’s special lunch event!  We also stopped and talked with Mr. Sugar Pine, the Talking Tree!  He sings a host of holiday songs and is so cute!

We stopped in the Mistletoe Marketplace on our way out.  We got a snack and picked up a few Christmas gifts!  We also stopped in the box office room to see our brightly lit Mommy Nest sign, as we are sponsors of their box office because we are offering a FREE Mommy Nest Egg discount card to every family who purchases tickets to KaLightoscope!  Be sure to get yours while you are there!

A little further down the hall, you can line up to meet Santa Claus!  The Jolly Old Elf himself is here for the season and he visits with children Free of charge!  Families are welcome to bring their cameras in.  We will be returning for a more exclusive Breakfast with Santa event on December 14th and will offer up more info on ticket specials for that as well!

Some of the wonderful entertainment offered by the hotel includes the dancing Bellmen!  They perform nightly at 5 pm in the Suite (East) Tower Lobby.  On select nights, you can get tickets for their Color of the Season Holiday Dinner Show.  This heartwarming musical combines holiday favorites with dancing, festive costumes, and dazzling sets!  Show times and prices are on their website but this is a dinner show that should not be missed!

You can do a lot of these events without staying overnight at the hotel, but if you want to extend your stay, there is a Silver and Gold Package, a Comfort and Joy Package, and a Holly Jolly Package offered, each of which includes various items.  Overnight stay packages are as low as $159 a night and include 4 tickets to KaLightoscope.  For more info visit:

In addition to everything above, there are numerous restaurants like Café Magnolia that are great!  Down One Bourbon Bar is one of America’s Top 55 bourbon tasting experiences, and the International Choir Festival “Sing n Joy” will be at the hotel this weekend as well!  On Nov. 29th, the Galt House Hotel helps to kick off 40 Nights of Lights with the annual Light up Louisville event and will be at the end of the Light show nightly.

Christmas at the Galt House Hotel is so spectacular, it’s featured on the Travel Channel’s Christmas Crazy special.
