Come out and Paint the Town with Chicago at CenterStage!
Centerstage Theatre of Louisville opens the second musical of their new season next Thursday! This time around they will be Paintin' the Town and All That Jazz with Chicago.
Chicago is a Tony Award-winning play and Oscar-winning movie. Set in the 1920s, the story follows the glamorization of criminals, specifically female criminals. The Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and is the third longest-running show in Broadway history, having played more than 7,300 performances. The Academy Award-winning 2002 film version of the musical was directed by Rob Marshall and starred Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, John C. Reilly, and Queen Latifah.
Chicago is a musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she reported on. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the "celebrity criminal."
Two main characters, Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, are both attempting to use their new found celebrity status (after being thrown in prison) to jumpstart their careers in show business. They look to Mama Morton the prison warden and lawyer Billy Flynn for help getting out. Audiences will recognize numbers like "He Had it Comin' and "All That Jazz," and will love the Fosse inspired, flapper style of the 20's1.
