Derby Dinner Playhouse Princess Penelope's Dragon review and Giveaway!
Last week Derby Dinner Playhouse opened the world premiere musical comedy, PRINCESS PENELOPE’S DRAGON, as part of their Children’s Musical Theatre Series. This show, like all of their Children’s Theater shows, was spectacular. Under the direction of Matthew Brennan, a fairytale world comes alive and children learn the about not lying and building meaningful friendships.
It’s Princess Penelope’s birthday and, as she is loved and admired by all, the kingdom is set to celebrate! Penelope tries to live up to everyone’s expectations and tries to be perfect all the time. When she makes mistakes, instead of taking responsibility, she blames everything on her imaginary dragon. Things get really complicated when that Dragon shows up! This musical comedy is a clever, updated take on the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” and is about honesty, earning trust and friendship.
Carly Stotts as Penelope really knows how to connect with all of the little ones in her audience! They simply adored her and she knew how to transform herself into one of them, a shy little girl who just doesn’t want to get in trouble! Sandra Rivera does double duty, playing both a neighborhood mother and Penelope’s Dragon! The good news is that this dragon is not scary, not at all! She is pinky and fluffy and too cute! Any child would want to take her home! Kevin Crain, as the king, along with his trusty sidekick, played by Chris Bryant, try to lead Penelope in the right way by teaching her the importance of not making up stories. Sally Scott and Kyle Lueken round out the cast as two adorable neighborhood children who want to help Penelope learn how to become a true friend.
As with all great Derby Dinner shows, this one started out with a delicious buffet. We go to the breakfast buffets because my kiddos love the French toast sticks and scrambled eggs! The lunch buffet is great too though! You can’t beat this meal and show ticket price! My kids loved meeting the cast afterwards and Penelope and I had something in common, we both had super sparkly shoes!
PRINCESS PENELOPE’S DRAGON was written by Matt & Tina Jo Wallace especially for the Derby Dinner audience. The music was composed by Derby Dinner Musical Director, Scott Bradley. Songs featured in PRINCESS PENELOPE’S DRAGON are “Hide and Seek”, “My Dragon”, “The Royal Guard Blues”, and more!
