Disney/Pixar INSIDE OUT Review
Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Disney•Pixar’s original new film “Inside Out” ventures inside the mind to find out. They have done it again with creating a magical, funny, moving animated film that will leave you wishing it wasn't over!
My family and I had the pleasure of seeing an advanced screening of the movie last night and I am telling you that you MUST make plans to go see this movie! You will love it!
Based in Headquarters, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five Emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and frankly, neither is anyone else. All of these main characters are superb, and there are even some characters who have minor roles in the film that will inspire you, namely, Bing-Bong, an imaginary friend from long ago who is made out of cotton candy! And of course, who didn't dream of rainbow haired unicorns? There is one in this movie too! LOL
When Riley's family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind—taking some of her core memories with them—Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters, and Riley. While some of the topics are more tweenish, because the main character is 11 going on 12, even the youngest kiddos will get a kick out of watching the movie. And, as an adult, I was fascinated to watch how the film uniquely discussed cool topics like the ways in which our minds dream, process thoughts, and more.
Your kids will crack up over and over and you will cry! Yep, take the tissues because there are a few parts of this film that will leave you remembering how you felt when you watched Toy Story 3. You will get all nostalgic remembering what it was like to be a carefree child and how certain memories can be so dear! You will also tear up when realizing that your little ones still have so much to learn about what creates us and our personalities! And one vital lesson that the movie teaches us is that sometimes we have to live through times of sadness to strengthen all of our emotions and bring us closer to who we are at the end of the day! Through it all you will laugh and cry and love it! Inside Out has received near-unanimous critical acclaim!
Be sure to get there early enough to see the cute "Lava" short and stay all the way through the credits to see inside the minds of some really funny characters! On a side note, I read that even though animation is typically an industry dominated by men, half of the story crew brought on for this movie were women. I definitely think you can see that in the diversity of emotions played out.
Directed by Academy Award® winner Pete Docter ("Monsters, Inc.", "Up"), produced by Jonas Rivera, p.g.a. ("Up") and featuring an original score by Michael Giacchino ("The Incredibles," "Ratatouille," "Up"), Disney•Pixar's "Inside Out" opens in theaters on June 19, 2015.
