Last weekend I visited Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, TN to experience their Country Christmas!  With Nashville only 2.5 hours away from Louisville, this is one of the top rated places to go for a fun weekend or holiday trip. Opryland is so family friendly and my kids were so excited, especially with the Grinch and Rudolph themes this year!

You couldn’t ask for a more spectacular place to experience so many things!  Whether going as a family to focus on all of the kid-friendly events or just wanting to enjoy a romantic weekend with your significant other, there is something for everyone.  A Country Christmas has been hailed as one of the “Ten Great Places to Catch up with Santa” by USA Today; “The Most Christmassy Hotel in the Nation” by the Travel Channel’s Extreme Christmas; one of the top 10 places to spend Christmas in the world by Travel + Leisure; and a “Nashville treasure” by Southern Living.

We got there early and while we waited for our room to be ready we went to the Breakfast with the Grinch in the Delta Water’s Edge Section.  The scenery is made to look like scenes from the Grinch and everything fit perfectly with the new theme of the hotel this year!  We dined at their buffet on everything from waffles and omlettes from the specialty stations, to pastries, eggs, bacon, and more.  There was even a chocolate fondue fountain!  Kids get to meet the Grinch, the very one who appears in the fantastic musical going on there. He was hilarious.  He comes to your table, talks with the kids, stays in character, and overall was great!

We spent a little time after we ate looking in some of the wonderful little shops and then after unpacking we caught the shuttle and took a quick trip over to the Grand Ole Opry House where Grinch the Musical is playing this year.   My 5 and 10 year old watched every minute of the show in amazement and loved the fact that they could take popcorn and refreshments into the theater.  This is a Broadway style production, with extremely talented actors playing all of the roles you are familiar with from the classic story of the Grinch.  The costumes and scenery are colorful and fun and the music made you want to sing along.  This is a MUST SEE show for the entire family!

Once we got back over to the hotel we went shopping in the great boutique booth area!  It was great because they have a children's area also set up where they can ride the train, the holiday themed tea cups, make gingerbread houses, and stuff their own reindeer at the Build A Bear Workshop!

By this time in the evening, it had gotten darker and the entire hotel was lit up everywhere inside with all sorts of Christmas lights.  The kids always love to take the boat ride through the entire Delta Atrium, so this time we opted to do the Christmas themed one!  They give you these great 3D glasses where all the lights look like candy canes floating in the air.  The boat ride is themed to the 12 Days of Christmas and was so much fun!

We always like to eat dinner in the Delta Atrium, upstairs at a cozy little pizza place.  We were served quickly and we were able to sit and watch the fountain show where the water and lights are all themed to Christmas music.  On our way back to our room, we took time to view the Parade of Trees.  This is a self-guided tour of stunningly decorated Christmas trees throughout the resort. Numerous country artists and other celebrities will have specially decorated trees featured. Each tree’s decorations and prizes are available to the highest online bidder as a way to benefit favorite charities.  As we got back to the room that night and got the boys into their Christmas pjs, everyone was truly in the holiday spirit.

The next morning we got up and grabbed pastries from a nice little shop downstairs.  Then we let the kids take some time going on the Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt throughout the hotel.

After we checked out we got in the car and drove across the street to experience ICE!™ which has a super cute Rudolph theme this year.  It is a quick and easy walk, but there is also a shuttle if you would rather wait and ride. Artisans from Harbin, China arrived months ago and transformed two million pounds of ice into larger than life colorful sculptures and incredible 20 ft. tall slides.  ICE!™! takes place in the 40,000 sq. ft. events center.  The event, which takes place inside, portrays the lovable characters and storyline from the story we all know so well.  They do provide you with huge warm parkas to wear inside (although you should still bring your own coat to wear underneath, a hat and gloves as it is only 9 degrees inside).  My kids especially love the ice slide!  You can go down as many times as you want!

They have hot chocolate stations when you come out where you can purchase a steaming hot mug with marshmallows!
