I had the opportunity to be transported to a land of fairytales when I attended the opening of Into the Woods at Derby Dinner Playhouse last week!  From the moment you walk into the theater you know you are in for a treat as everything looks magical.  The walls are covered with tree limbs and twinkling lights and you see small staging areas throughout the pathways telling you that the audience is going to be truly immersed in the stories they are getting ready to tell!

INTO THE WOODS is an epic and modern fairytale about wishes, family, and the choices we make.     As the result of the b2ap3_thumbnail_Into-the-Woods-Photo.jpgcurse of a once-beautiful witch, a baker and his wife are left childless.  Three days before the rise of a blue moon, they venture into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the spell and restore the witch's beauty: a milk-white cow, hair as yellow as corn, a blood-red cape, and a slipper of gold.  During their journey, they meet Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack, each one on a quest to fulfill a wish.  Everyone’s wish is eventually granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

Sara King who plays the Witch is just as marvelous as ever.  Some will remember her from playing Mary Poppins last year!  She is comedic when delivering her lines and moving when delivering her vocals!  Kaylee Annable is unbelievably child-like playing Little Red Riding Hood, and you just love her and her spunky character.  Billy Casey and Ryan Burch portray the 2 princes in the show and I love their very “Gaston-like” demeanor.  They kept parts of the show light and funny, to keep it from becoming to dark.  And, I can’t go without mentioning Lem Jackson’s portrayal of Milky White, the cow.  Even though he spends the entire show in a costume, he brings such life to this animal!

This enchanting and wickedly witty Tony Award-winning musical features a score written by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine.  Songs featured in this production are “Into the Woods”, “Hello Little Girl”, “Agony”, “Ever After”, “Children will Listen” and more.

Derby Dinner’s production of INTO THE WOODS is directed by Lee Buckholz with Musical Direction by Scott Bradley and Choreography by Heather Paige Folsom.  The cast will include Sara King as the Witch, Matthew Brennan as the Baker, Jillian Prefach as the Baker’s Wife, Jim Hesselman as the Narrator, and many more!

INTO THE WOODS is recommended for ages 13 & up.  There are several darker themes in the show.

Derby Dinner Playhouse will present the Broadway musical INTO THE WOODS, opening February 23 and running through April 3, 2016.  For ticket information please call 812-288-8281 or visit
