Review

It’s back by popular demand!  Derby Dinner Playhouse presents the classic holiday musical IRVING BERLIN’S WHITE CHRISTMAS, which opened last week and runs through December 31, 2015.

I had the opportunity to see this classic musical on the Derby stage and it was the perfect thing to get me in the holiday b2ap3_thumbnail_12193630_1102407646451137_8723910832706963567_n.jpgspirit! IRVING BERLIN’S WHITE CHRISTMAS follows a couple of World War II GI’s turned song-and-dance men as they pair up with a sister act to produce a Christmas Eve show in an effort to save a struggling Vermont lodge owned by their former commanding officer.  The result is a sparkling package filled with splashy dance numbers and treasured tunes that will take audiences back to a time when life was simpler and snow was on everyone’s Christmas wish list.

Based on the timeless 1954 film starring Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby, this heartwarming musical adaptation features seventeen Irving Berlin songs and a book by David Ives and Paul Blake.  The Derby cast brings this beautiful story to life with great performances by so many.  Under the direction of Lee Buckholz, this musical is revived with spectacular scenes!  Jillian Prefach and Jake Delaney play the quiet but loveable Betty Haynes and Bob Wallace.  Their counterparts, Judy Haynes and Phil Davis, played by Matthew Brennan and Brittany Cox steal the show!  Their energy and chemistry are undeniable and have you falling in love with their characters.  I absolutely wanted to get up and tap dance with them during their duet in “I love a Piano.”  With choreography by Heather Paige Folsom, the entire chorus does a fantastic job of pulling off huge, Broadway style dance numbers.  I was thrilled to see 15 some odd people all on stage tapping their hearts out at one time!  Other notable performances are Paul Kerr's portrayal of General Waverly, he is such a loveable grandfather to the adorable Ellena Usher, who plays Susan!  Sharing the inn as a home with them is Martha Watson, played by Elizabeth Loos, who belts out a mean rendition of "Let me Sing and I'm Happy."

The romantic and dazzling score also features “Happy Holidays”, “Sisters”, “Blue Skies”, “I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm”, “Let Yourself Go”, “White Christmas”, and more!   With some memorable holiday songs and some feel-good upbeat songs, Musical Director Scott Bradley, has this cast singing their hearts out and has the audience clapping and singing along.

Various dates/times, most days there is a matinee and an evening performance – see website for choices or call the box office at 812-288-8281.  Tickets start at $37 and include a full buffet meal, which is a fabulous, traditional holiday turkey dinner!
