It's a Wonderful Life at Derby Dinner Playhouse!
I had the opportunity to attend the opening night performance of the new holiday musical, A WONDERFUL LIFE at Derby Dinner Playhouse and I am in the Christmas spirit! This uplifting show is just what everyone needs for that does of holiday cheer! Many probably know the movie well, but this is a stage adaptation that has been turned into a musical and everything about it just works so well that you will want to see it again!
Frank Capra’s film classic has been brought to vibrant theatrical life! Set in 1945, it tells the story of George Bailey, a man who is continually setting aside his own dreams in order to keep his late father’s building and loan business afloat. When a greedy bank manufactures a scandal that threatens to send him to jail, George is crushed. Sent to help him in his hour of need on Christmas Eve, a guardian angel reveals to him how different the world and everyone whose life he has touched would be had he never been born. An uplifting chronicle of the extraordinary lives of ordinary folk, A WONDERFUL LIFE exhilarates the mind and heart and celebrates the innate goodness in us all.
George Bailey is played by DDP newcomer Edward Miskie and he has that same charisma as James Stewart. Sara King beautifully balances him out when he is distraught as Mary Hatch. They both have such a clear and robust quality to their voices, I especially liked If I had a Wish! Carey Wiger portrays Clarence again in a role that he is so right for! He brings out the laughs just when you start to tear up over George's bad luck! The large and enthusiastic cast also includes Jim Hesselman, Debbie King-Raque, Elizabeth Loos, Matthew Brennan, and many more! Possibly stealing the show whenever she is on stage is 6 year old Payton Wyatt who is one of the children double cast in the role of ZuZu (the youngest daughter). This little tyke sings and dances along with the rest of the cast as though she is 6 ft tall, even though she is barely 3 ft tall! Adorable does not describe it enough!
The book and lyrics for A WONDERFUL LIFE were written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winner Sheldon Harnick with music by Grammy and Emmy Award-winner Joe Raposo and was adapted from the 1946 Frank Capra film “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Songs featured are “If I Had a Wish”, “Wings”, “Not What I Expected”, “A Wonderful Life”, and more!
