Walking into the theater to see Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s newest installment in their ever growing cinematic universe, I was readying myself for a let down. As a huge Marvel fanboy I had the highest hopes that this movie would be as good as Iron Man, Captain America or even The Avengers, but I was still nervous that it could be a dud. To my relief, it was more amazing than I could have dreamed.

Guardians centers around adventurer Peter Quill who finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy's fate in the balance.b2ap3_thumbnail_guardians-galaxy-movie-preview.jpg

This movie is an origin story for the team and does a great job introducing the members by how they fit into the story, without dwelling too heavily on their pasts. The movie is a space adventure, but the much of the focus is on the interaction between characters and how they go from enemies to allies to friends. The movie doesn’t rely too much on the audience knowing the comic book backstories and stands well on it own. Rocket and Groot are the stars of the movie adding much of the heart and comic relief. Visually the movie is stunning with the movie’s final battle delivering tons of eye candy. I was able to see the movie in 3D, but while it enhanced the movie experience I don’t know that it’s worth the extra price.

Guardian’s is rated PG-13 and I would recommend parents observe the ‘13’ part as this movie has scenes with sexual innuendo and harsh violence. Overall, I highly recommend this movie for the over 13 crowd.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy's fate in the balance. Rated PG-13.
