Date Night Pick of the Month! Sweeney Todd at CenterStage Review and Ticket Giveaway!
“Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street at CenterStage is the new MUST-SEE Thriller this Halloween season!
Time for a Date Night, make it a thriller this Halloween season! Last night I had the opportunity to sit in the audience at CenterStage of Louisville and I was blown away by it! CenterStage artistic director, John R. Leffert does a phenomenal job of bringing a large cast together to create a perfect balance between a spooky story and a heartbreaking love story. Sweeny Todd brings murder and mayhem to the stage, along with some singing, and comedy!
The 1979 musical is based on a 1973 play by Christopher Bond about a 19th century London barber who goes on a murderous rampage and the baker who helps him by baking his victims into pies. Written by Stephen Sondheim with libretto by Hugh Wheeler, the show has won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book, Best Direction, Best Scenic and Costume Design and Best Acting Awards to Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury.
As the show begins, we are greeted by a cast of characters so chilling it takes your breath away. Though not gory or gross in anyway, there is something about their costumes and hair and makeup that just intrigue you! Led by an orchestra that leads your heart into the music, the cast members sing out robustly as they invite you to spend time with them, learning about the mysterious character, Sweeney Todd.
As Austin Lauer (Sweeney Todd) enters, you are immediately engrossed in his face. He plays his part with such sadness that you actually end up feeling sorry for him, even though he does the unthinkable! Paired with Jennifer Poliskie (Mrs. Lovett) he rarely cracks a smile, though her crazy antics keep him thinking about it. For it is through her mad schemes the two devise a plan to keep both Todd's demons fed and Mrs. Lovett's customers happy with full bellies! The two roles could not have been cast better when it comes to actors who can not only hit every note impeccably but play off each other so well that one would believe they were an old married couple.
The two lead a cast that includes a child-like Tobias, played by Andrew Hughes, who nearly brings you to tears with "No One's Gonna Hurt You." As a character that gets caught in the middle of something he never saw coming, he never seems to crack, masking his character's short-comings at every turn. Young lovers, Anthony & Joanna, played by Mitch Donahue & Margo Wooldridge, have voices like birds. Hitting notes high and low but with such emotion that you believe their love can survive anything. Judge Turpin, played by Russ Dunlap, plays his character so convincingly, he leaves you disgusted, as one should be with him. Everyone in the ensemble lends beautiful harmony to big vocal numbers!
Though this is a spooky and chilling show, there is no blood and gore. I would rate it PG13. There are some loud sirens and flashing lights at times, but those add to the overall feel! The set, designed by Karl Anderson, has an industrial, asylum-like feel.
