Derby Dinner Playhouse opened its newest musical last week, THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, and we were there for Opening Night!  This fun show is different, unique, and one that is not-to-miss!

A live band onstage brings this rousing, bawdy Southern folk tale to life! Set in eighteenth-century Mississippi, the show follows Jamie Lockhart, a rascally robber of the woods, as he courts Rosamund, the only daughter of the richest planter in the country. The proceedings go awry, however, thanks to a case of double-mistaken identity. Throw in an evil stepmother intent on Rosamund's demise, her pea-brained henchman, and a hostile talking head-in-a-trunk, and you have a rollicking country romp!

This cast does a superb job of keeping you laughing in your seat and also keeping you on track for the fast-paced fun.  While all of the cast members play a main role, they also play smaller roles that feed into the larger story so it is important to pay attention.  Patrick Dorrow as Jamie Lockhart is dashing and his sweetheart, Joey Banigan who plays Rosamund , is every bit his equal both in vocals and in her cunning ways!  Perhaps the biggest scene stealer of all is Mandi Elkins Hutchins, who plays Salome, the evil step mom.  She does every scene with full on comedic charm and doesn't hold back one bit.  I am sure she must be exhausted at the end of each show but she makes it all look so effortless!  Kuddos to everyone in this small but mighty cast who filled the stage and never left you remembering there are only 9 people in the cast!  And a big shout out to the band on stage who also partake in many of the numbers.

THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM is based on the novella by Eudora Welty.  The stage version and lyrics were written by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Alfred Uhry, with music by Robert Waldman. Since opening on Broadway, THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM features one of the only genuine bluegrass scores ever heard in a Broadway Musical.

Derby Dinner’s production is under the direction of Lee Buckholz with choreography by Heather Paige Folsom and Musical Direction by Scott Bradley.  The cast will feature Patrick Dorow, Joey Banigan, Mandi Elkins Hutchins, Clay Smith, Bobby Conte, Zachary Waters, Blake Graham, Colin Schreier, and Harli Cooper.
